On June 7, 2024, Pop Artist Charlie XCX released an album named brat that consists of 15 “party girl” songs. The term Brat Summer became the phenomenon of the summer. So, what actually is Brat summer? Brat summer is a culture; it’s not a physical thing you can hold or touch, it’s more of a mindset. Teens and young adults have taken the term “Brat Summer” and turned it into clothes, games, and media trends Brat Summer has not only taken the social media world by storm, but it has also taken over the Emery/Weiner campus.
Another Brat lover, Senior Sara Callahan, also “adores the album.” Not only does she love the musicality of the album, but she loves the pop culture part of it too. “I love brat summer and the whole trend that comes with it. The part I love most is that it’s so free to interpret what it actually means so it’s free for anyone to participate,” said Callahan.
“Regarding the album, I loved it.” Dr. Rawlins said in a recent interview. When asked what his favorite song is, he said, “Girl, So Confusing.” Rawlins talks about how the rhetoric used throughout the whole album was not only for lyrics but it also felt like Charlie XCX was telling a story. He continues later in the interview when asked about what Brat Summer was, he said “It’s really all up for interpretation. I feel like I really don’t embody what social media thinks about Brat Summer, but I feel like it’s just free to do whatever you want. This whole summer, I was in the carefree, workfree mindset, which is what I think Brat Summer is really all about.”
All ages can be seen loving and living a Brat Summer. From Generation X to Gen Alpha, it has really appealed to a wide range of ages because it’s not just for one kind of person or age, it’s for anyone and everyone.
