
From organizing substitutes at a moment’s notice to ensuring college visit absences are properly recorded, Mrs. Powell is the backbone of the Emery community. As the Upper School administrative assistant for the past seven years, she has played an essential role in keeping the high school functioning. Her role requires adaptability and quick problem-solving, skills that she has mastered over the years. Her dedication to students and faculty is truly unmatched, and her aura is filled with so much warmth and kindness.
Beyond her efficiency and commitment, Mrs. Powell is also famous for her Southern style. You can find her walking through the busy halls of Emery wearing her boots and flared jeans, accessorized with one of her many belts. Her ability to mix and match styles has earned her a reputation as “one of the most fashionable faculty members on campus,” according to sophomore Tinsley Blando. Mrs. Powell gives a glimpse into her fashion choices, stating, “I love pairing simple pieces and accessories with different jewelry and belts. I love denim, I love boots. One day I can be kind of sporty and another day I can be more boho chic.”
Mrs. Powell’s understanding nature is also evident in how she handles scheduling. Senior Alex Levy notes, “She is really on top of her game when it comes to attendance and scheduling conflicts. She’s definitely forgiving and understanding when it comes to different situations.” Sophomore, Maya Aruh tells us that whenever she approaches Mrs. Powell, “she is at her desk smiling, always ready to help the students. She really is super caring and always listens to us when we have conflicts with our attendances.”
Upper School Head Dr. Weinstein Sears praises Miss Powell’s exceptional work ethic and demeanor over the past seven years, stating that “one of the most amazing things about Miss Powell, and there are many, is how important her job is, how busy she is on a day to day basis, and how she does all of it with a smile. Miss Powell does it with finesse, with style and with a smile. And I just, I love that.”
At the end of the day, Mrs. Powell isn’t just an administrative assistant—she’s the glue that holds Emery together. Whether it’s from giving Emery a touch of Western style, getting students’ excused absences taken care of, or finding a teacher a last-minute substitute.
