If you’re having a rough day and on the verge of tears, a hug from Ms. Tracy Gipson is the perfect antidote. Her smile and embrace are like a mother’s warm hug. Through the whirlwind of college applications and high school insecurities, Gipson lets students put their guard down and take a deep breath. She is Emery/Weiner’s ray of sunshine.
Ten years ago, Emery changed for the better when Gipson started her first day. Though she initially worked in the kitchen, Gipson transitioned into the facilities department after COVID-19 and now plays an essential role in Emery’s daily operations and student life. The word “superwoman” should be added to Gipson’s job description. Sheshe does so much for every student at school– she is a facilities technician and a student support system all in one.
Senior Esther Gordon explains how every time she “has a bad quiz or bad day, Ms. Tracy will come up and give [her] a big hug.” Gordon appreciates how Gipson “has no judgement and is like a homebase for everyone on campus.” Similarly, senior Carly Katz admires how Gipson “puts other people before herself no matter what.” For example, when Gipson “goes into the restroom and sees that a girl is having a bad day,” she will give the girl a hug regardless if she knows her or not. “The way these girls hug me back shows me that it meant the world to them, and that makes me feel good too,” explains Gipson.
Gipson is not only appreciated by Emery students but also by faculty such as Spanish teacher, Tanya Meinecke. Meneicke feels that having Gipson around as a role model for students is such a benefit to our community. “Tracy is pure goodness,” Meinecke says with a smile. “Even after a hard day, Tracy leads by example and shows up for others.”
To show their love for Gipson, students threw her a half-birthday party this year since they can not celebrate with her over the summer. “The party made me feel like I was the most important person in the world,” admits Gipson. The truth is that Gipson is the most important person in many students’ lives. “Ms. Tracy has helped me grow into the best version of myself,” admits Gordon. “She has taught me the value of positivity and openness towards others.”
In a world where there are plenty of difficulties and roadblocks, Gipson wants every student to recognize the value of a hug. “For me, hugs are everything,” shares Gipson. “Any chance you get to hug someone, do it. It will make you and the person you are showing appreciation for feel so good.” Gipson’s motto of constant love and support is one that should speak to all of us. The world is a better place when you have selfless people around, like Ms. Tracy Gipson, showing you the way.
