May is an exciting month for “Star Wars” fans, with holidays and several anniversaries surrounding the franchise throughout the month. This month there are many who celebrate the series and its creators by throwing parties, watching movies, and going to events.
The “Star Wars” story started back in 1977, with the release of the first movie “Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope.” Highly regarded since the first movie came out, the series continued to gain traction as more movies were added to the series and the plot expanded. The story became iconic and currently consists of nine main movies — six of them directed and produced by George Lucas, and three by Disney after they purchased the franchise in 2012. Disney has since kept the series going, adding a wide variety of shows and movies built off the original story.
May 4th, also known as May the Fourth Be With You, a reference to an iconic line from the series, is the official Star Wars day where fans have a chance to come together and celebrate. Additionally, this was the month that all of the original six George Lucas movies were released. This year in particular will mark the 20th anniversary on May 19 of the last movie of the original series by George Lucas, “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith.” With the large number of dates and events in the month of May in relation to the “Star Wars” franchise, some viewers spend the whole month celebrating the series.
Fans celebrate during this month by doing movie marathons, where fans rewatch the entire series. Some also host themed parties where fans dress up as their favorite characters or attend events hosted by Disney, including celebrations at the parks and movie revivals in theaters for a limited time to celebrate big anniversaries and milestones.
Many people grew up watching this movie series, and the movies feel nostalgic. The franchise has grown a big following of people who enjoy the movies. This month is a great time to bond over shared memories of the series and to rewatch the movies for those who have not seen them a long time.
