From field hockey and lacrosse to pursuing her doctoral degree, our new head of Upper School, Jess Adams, is nothing short of a perfect addition to Emery — an addition that stands by Mr. Dow’s 2025 theme of “something greater.”
Mrs. Adams’ journey to education was less of a straight path, perhaps even a leap of faith. After several internships during college failed to spark her interest, she discovered teaching while at Columbia University. “I loved English, I loved literature, and I really loved just connecting with people, especially young people,” she reflected. That decision set the course for a career in education now spanning 15 years, during which she served as a teacher, academic dean, grade-level dean, and a girls’ varsity lacrosse coach. At the heart of each role, she embodied her core values: “building culture” and “helping students find their voices.”
When asked what drew her to Emery, Mrs. Adams emphasized one word: community. Even before her formal interview, she was struck by how intentional the process felt when Mr. Dow personally invited her to campus. “That showed me how much this school values connection,” she said.
Moreover, once on campus, she highlighted how it was the students themselves who left the greatest impression. “There’s this joy, this reverence here,” she said, recalling how the student ambassadors led her tour with confidence and humor. “That spirit really matters to me.”
Beyond her professional life, Mrs. Adams balances her doctoral work in leadership with family life alongside her husband, young daughter Isla, and their dogs. In her rare moments of free time, she enjoys reading, weightlifting, and more recently, roller coasters: an unexpected thrill she only discovered at age 33.
When talking about her high school experience after a deep dive down memory lane, the first thing she pointed out was that she was a “pretty straight-laced” student. However, she had a habit of doing something particular when stressed. I’m not referring to the common procrastination or doomscrolling on her phone — but a more distinctive challenge: sleepwalking. One night, before a major field hockey game, she suited up in full uniform, shin guards and backpack included, entirely asleep. “I even woke up outside,” she admitted with a laugh, adding that her parents eventually installed a gate to keep her safe. Her humorous yet humbling anecdote is an excellent reminder to us students that even our own leaders and staff have their own quirks and vulnerabilities.
This spring, Emery’s varsity girls’ lacrosse team will have the unique opportunity of seeing their head of school not only on the sidelines but also coaching on the field. “Lacrosse is such an empowering sport for girls. It’s just so fun. I’m excited to help Coach Fry this year,” she said. Coaching, she explained, allows her to connect with students in a way that is different from the classroom yet equally meaningful. The girls’ varsity lacrosse team can’t wait for what Mrs. Adams has to offer for this 2025-2026 season.
As the Emery Upper School enters this new chapter, Mrs. Adams embodies a balance of spunk, humor, vision, and vitality. She is committed to creating academic excellence while also embracing the joy and culture that defines Emery. Approachable and intellectually driven, she reflects the idea of “something greater”: a leader who is present not only as an administrator but as a mentor, coach, and a community-driven person!
Freshman Payton Fishman says, “Mrs. Adams brings such radiant and sweet energy, I’m so excited to get to know her!” Mrs. Adams, the Upper School students are so happy to have you!
