Gas: The App That Changed Emery

Jake Newman, Reporter

Historically, Emery/Weiner has never been a school with many couples, but with the rise of an app called Gas, that may change. Gas is an app commonly associated with Snapchat, where people vote for their peers with the given prompts. The prompts can be about anything, but they generally involve some sort of compliment. When someone votes for them, they will receive a notification that will show the prompt, their name, and the name of the other choices on the poll, and it will tell them the age and gender of the person who voted for them. The purpose of the app is to find out who likes you anonymously.

Since late October, this app has become very popular among Emery students. Since the app has become popular, students have received countless notifications that say they have received a vote. For example, sophomore Dawson Tiras received, “Should have told them how I feel a long time ago,” from a 9th-grade girl. Though Tiras is unsure who voted for him, he claims, “This boosts my confidence knowing that someone likes me.” The good thing about Gas is that all of the prompts are positive, meaning that as a user, you are receiving and sending positive messages.

Some people do not take Gas seriously. Sophomore Maddie Lacombe sees Gas as an app for fun rather than a semi-dating platform. Though Lacombe doesn’t feel any confidence boost from Gas, she received “Most Likely to Marry Harry Styles” from multiple people. This prompt suits her well, as Lacombe is well-known for her obsession with Harry Styles.

Students are using Gas more and more every day. Gas might be the new big thing at Emery.
