Waygood Coffee sits in a perfect corner of Houston: located on Kirby Drive, it’s easy enough to get to, surrounded by great restaurants, and arguably in one of the city’s best areas. The inside of this new spot is beautifully designed: bright, clean, and modern, with cozy corners enticing you to stay and study for a while.
The baristas recommended the Waygood Latte, James Brown, and the Strawberry Fields Matcha, so I decided to try them all.
The Waygood Latte reminded me of a Starbucks Iced Blonde Vanilla Latte or Starbucks White Chocolate Mocha but smoother and better balanced. It’s sweet and light, with just enough coffee to keep it from being too sugary. The “cloud” on top, a whipped foam topping, adds a very nice sweet and salty contrast, making it stand out from a typical latte.
The James Brown, a brown sugar cinnamon latte, completely lived up to its hype. The brown sugar and warm espresso blended perfectly, and the cinnamon added a great, deeper note. This drink is the kind to make you pause for a second after the first sip–it’s that good. Easily my favorite drink on the menu.
Then there’s the Strawberry Fields, a matcha latte with strawberry syrup. My drink was a little too milky, but the matcha tasted high-quality, and the strawberry flavor was subtle enough to complement it rather than overpowering it. One thing I love about Waygood is how customizable everything is. You can choose exactly how sweet you want your drink (from 1-100%) and adjust other details too.
I also tried some of the food items on the menu. The jalapeño turkey cheese croissant was absolutely delicious, perfectly spicy, and full of flavor. The pumpkin muffin, on the other hand, was not as impressive: it was a bit undercooked and crumbly, though the flavor was decent.
Overall, Waygood Coffee exceeded my expectations and is a great cafe not just for its great drinks, but for its location, atmosphere, and creativity. Between the inviting space, friendly staff, and the fact that it has a drive-thru, it’s definitely a place I’ll be coming back to.
