Senior Night, a long-standing tradition on many school campuses, marks the moment when many senior athletes take the field or court for their final game. At The Emery/Weiner School, this evening represents far more than the end of a season; it is a celebration of years of dedication, teamwork, and growth. Families, friends, coaches, and teammates come together to honor the seniors who have led their programs and strengthened Emery’s sense of community.
For many athletes, Senior Night is a bittersweet occasion. It serves as a reminder of how far they have come and a reminder of the many lessons they have learned through sports. Skills gained throughout their athletic career, such as perseverance, leadership, and community, extend far beyond the court. Senior Lauren Getz, captain of the volleyball team, resonates with these sentiments, describing the night as “a moment to commemorate the years dedicated to the program, the memories made, and the lessons learned.”
This tradition also unites the school community, inviting everyone to come together and celebrate. Athletics undoubtedly impact students’ high school experience, whether through shared rituals like pre-game pep talks or post-game dinners. Senior Blake Saikin reflected on this, saying that the football program has not only given him “connections and friendships” but also taught him “discipline and consistency.” Senior Night reminds us that athletics are not just about winning but also about developing character and leadership.
For coaches, the event is equally meaningful. Director of Athletics Angie Gubitz shared that Senior Night is one of the most memorable events of the year. She described this year’s senior class as an “incredibly positive, team-oriented, and loyal group,” noting that they have shown exceptional commitment and dedication to the athletics program. “We have watched them grow from boys and girls into confident young adults,” she expressed. “They’ve become role models and set a new standard for what it means to be a Jag.” Gubitz hopes that each athlete leaves Emery with confidence and a sense of pride, knowing that they are valued for the time and effort they invested into the program. “I want them to know they’re capable of doing hard things,” she said. “They have developed the grit, discipline, and resilience to take on life after high school.”
As the athletes receive their final round of applause, Senior Night solidifies that sports are more than just competition; they are about community, growth, and purpose. The night symbolizes both an ending and a beginning, celebrating not only the seniors’ accomplishments but also the impact of their dedication. Ultimately, Senior Night is a tribute to the journey, one that culminates in a deeper understanding of what it means to be part of something greater.
